Newbold Estate
Field Trips

The Newbold Estate in Warren County, Pennsylvania, once the property of a prominent local family, is now a recreation site of the Allegheny National Forest. This natural area is located at the junction of the Allegheny River and Brokenstraw Creek where Seneca Indians once farmed and where “Johnny Appleseed” Chapman planted his first apple orchard. Hints of the Estate’s once elegant mansion and gardens can be seen among the rich bottomland forests, brushy thickets, ponds and fields that make up the area. The adjacent state- owned Anders Run Natural Area includes old-growth White Pine stands and Hemlock-lined cold-water creeks. The two areas together provide the full range of bird habitats to be found in the region, making this a favorite local birding hotspot.
